Margie gave Bentley Jones a final wave as the elevator doors shut and her client disappeared. She clenched her fist, keeping it by her side to avoid making a spectacle of herself. Really, she wanted to fist pump the air. Bentley had signed with an initial investment of five hundred thousand dollars. It was perfect timing with the review board making their decision on the promotion this week. She’d need to make sure Jacob and Clint were aware of this deal immediately. She also decided to keep it to herself until they knew. The last thing she wanted was Linda swooping in and taking the credit.

Her gut contracted thinking of Linda. Linda, who had been conspicuously absent since Monday and her lunchtime revelation. Margie had never known Linda to take a day off. Sure, she was away sometimes with work, but for her to call in sick was unheard of. Part of her felt terrible that she might be responsible for Linda’s absence, but another part of her knew those were Linda’s issues not hers. There’s no way Margie could have had any idea that Linda was interested in her. Even if she had been aware, Linda had been awful toward her. She still found it hard to digest. She’d heard Linda boast about dates with men and wondered if she’d ever actually had a relationship with a woman? Perhaps she was bi.

Janice approached her on her way past reception to her office. The floor was quiet today with some staff involved in an off-site training seminar. “Got time to grab a coffee?”

Margie nodded. “Sure. Next meeting’s not until two. We could make it lunch if you’ve got time?”

“I’ll grab my bag.”

Five minutes later, the two women sat across from each other at Vibe; a hip café tucked away at the bottom of their building.

They placed their orders, and Margie leaned back in her chair and sighed.

Concern crossed Janice’s face. “Everything okay?”

“Was thinking about Linda. I’m not sure what I should do about her.”

“I don’t think it’s up to you to do anything. She’s acted worse than a five-year-old who has a crush and thinks hitting someone or throwing rocks at them is a good way to get their attention. If anything, Linda’s attempts at getting attention were a lot worse than those of a five-year-old. I still can’t get my head around how she could think belittling you at every opportunity would be something you’d find attractive.”

Margie smiled at the analogy. It was quite accurate. She pictured them as children with Linda running after her, chasing her and pinching her. That was precisely what had happened to her when she was five. Although it was a sandy-haired boy, not a girl, who’d chased her back then. “I’ve been thinking about it,” Margie said, “and when she took over from Rochelle, she was nice at first. I’m now wondering if that was her attempt to get me interested in her. Something must have happened where she knew I wasn’t interested, so her behavior changed.
